What is an XCF file?

XCF (eXperimental Computing Facility) is the native image format of the GIMP image editor. It saves all data the program handles, including layers, channels, paths, and guides.

Similar to Photoshop's PSD, XCF files are for editing rather than final distribution. Our Online XCF Viewer lets you preview your GIMP projects without installing the software.

How to View XCF Files Online

1

Upload XCF

Drag and drop your .xcf file into the viewer.

2

Preview

The viewer renders a composite preview of the image.

3

Download

Save the preview as a standard JPG or PNG file.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need GIMP to open XCF files?

Not with this tool. You can view the contents of an XCF file directly in your web browser.

Can I edit the layers?

This tool is a viewer. It displays the final composite image but does not support editing individual layers.

Is XCF better than JPG?

XCF is a project file that preserves editing capabilities, while JPG is a compressed final image. Use XCF for working and JPG for sharing.
